A Great 2 Days At Central High School

  • Saturday, May 14, 2016

Dedicated Central alumnus Charlie Sedman's article on May 2 lauding the events of Class Day at Central was informative and well-written as the school honored not only the Senior Class of 2016 but also six Distinguished Alumni who have excelled in their personal and professional lives so as to bring further honor on Central's hallowed history from 1907 at Dodds Avenue and now Highway 58.

As a further example of the Central Spirit, the next day scholarships were awarded to deserving members of the 2016 Class in a monetary value in excess of $1 million. Community organizations, Hope Scholarships, UTC, UTK, Chattanooga State, Lee University, Tennessee Wesleyan, families of Central graduates, and others gave funds to further the educational goal of the seniors.

Last but not least were the 15 permanently-endowed scholarships at the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga that were created to perpetually help qualified students obtain a college education. Through the efforts of the Central High Alumni/Supporters Association, approximately $700,000 has been raised to fund said scholarships at the CFGC at 120 Market St., Chattanooga, Tennessee, 37402. Hopefully additional funds can be raised to allow more qualified Central graduates to attend college and be ambassadors for the ‘Central Spirit”.

The Central Scholarship Program has become a model for other high schools in the Hamilton County area in setting up similar funds to help their seniors.  It was a great two days at Central High.
