Golfers from throughout the region competed in the first annual MetMin King Oehmig Memorial Classic on Monday at Black Creek Club. This first annual golf event celebrates the life and legacy of the former Baylor Golf Coach, Episcopal priest and longtime Metropolitan Ministries (MetMin) supporter, King Oehmig.

The field was full due to the overwhelming response from players and sponsors.  Proceeds support the work of MetMin, a Chattanooga-based agency that has provided emergency financial support, wrap-around services and disaster relief for almost four decades.

The tournament began with remarks from Gary Chazen, friend of Mr. Oehmig, about his legacy and the work of MetMin.  Gary was joined by Margy Oehmig and their sons, John and Henry, along with several other family members and friends.

“To me, Christianity is about ecstasy, a dimension of inexpressible wonder of love that has no boundaries, no restraints.” King Oehmig was a noted Christian author and scholar who served parishes throughout the South for over three decades. His other passion was golf. As coach at Chattanooga’s Baylor School, Mr. Oehmig garnered 21 TSSAA titles and was named Girls’ Golf Coach of the year in 2007. The MetMin King Oehmig Memorial Classic serves as a lively tribute to his sense of community and service: “total un-hand-cuffed love.”
