“The Spirit of Dalton cheer team is going to take this town by storm this year,” said Coach Robyn Pursley as she announced this week that open tryouts for the 2016-2017 team will be held May 11-13 at Bandy Gymnasium on the Dalton State campus. “Our purpose is to encourage crowd participation, and to provide entertainment and support at athletic events,” added the coach. “The squad will consist of 16-20 men and women.”

Pursley said she is currently recruiting, selecting, and signing Dalton State cheerleaders for the coming school year. “I am looking for athletes,” said Pursley. “Full and partial scholarships are will be available as the team fills the positions of two to three female bases, one or two males, and two to three flyers.”

“If you are recruited, presented with a scholarship offer, and signed, you are not required to participate in the open tryout selection process,” said the coach. “Any current or incoming students who has been accepted or who is intending to apply to Dalton State for the 2016-2017 school year and is passionate and experienced in cheerleading is encouraged to attend the open tryouts or to call my cell at 423 355-2979.”

Tryouts registration will begin at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11, and a clinic will begin at 5:30 p.m. sharp. Participants will learn new material and be evaluated on skills during the May 11 and 12 sessions. The clinic and tryouts will be closed to the public. The new Roadrunner cheerleader roster will be announced on Saturday morning, May 14.
