Ruth Brown
Ruth Brown died on Saturday, May 21, 2016.
She was born to Elder A. D., Sr. and Betty Moore Hammond on Dec. 20, 1940, in Madison County, Al. Ruth was the 11th of 13 children. She confessed her personal faith in God at an early age. She was a faithful member of Antioch P.B. Church until her health failed. Prior to joining Antioch she was a faithful member of the New Mt. Carmel M. B. Church.
She graduated from Council Training High School in Huntsville, and moved to Chattanooga for a few years. She relocated to Detroit, where she was employed at Winkleman’s Department Store. In 1975 she relocated back to Chattanooga and started her 28-year career as the switchboard operator, later becoming the switchboard supervisor at Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute; she also worked as a time keeper at the institute and retired in 2003.
She was preceded in death by her husband George Brown; parents, Elder A. D. Hammond, Sr., and Betty Moore Hammond; sisters, Florence Berry, Vernell Readus, Georgiana Lyons and Zaretta Hammond; brothers, Benjamin, Clarence, Jethro, Charlie, Rev. A. D, Jr. and Thomas Hammond; mother-in-law, Mrs. Bettie L. Mackey.
Ruth is survived by her sons, Darryl (Carolyn) and Marcus (Lessie) Brown, both of Chattanooga; grandchildren, Darryl Tre' Brown, Marcus Brown, Jr., Kyree Brown, Angel Brown, Daylen Carter and RaShawnda Porter, all of Chattanooga; great-grandchildren, Bailee and Tyson Porter, lll of Chattanooga; brothers Eugene (Sylvia) Hammond of Columbus, OH and Rev. Carlisle (Mary) Hammond of Huntsville, AL; sisters-in-law, Naomi Hammond, East Pointe, MI, Geneva Hammond and Sarah Hammond of Huntsville; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins, family and friends.
Services will be held at noon on Friday, May 27, at Antioch Primitive Baptist Church. Interment will be at 1:30 p.m. in the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
Her body will lie in state after noon on Thursday, and the family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.
