Rescue personnel started the Memorial Holiday weekend at the Pocket Wilderness hiking trails on Saturday morning.
A man had been camping on the trails with friends Friday night when the accident occurred. They had been gathering branches for firewood when he tripped and fell on a branch which impaled his thigh.
With no cell service and having no daylight, the group waited to hike out of the woods to call for help. Unfortunately, the injured man was unable to walk out of the woods. Some in the group started walking the trail to receive a cell signal to call for help while others stayed with the injured man.
The Mowbray Volunteer Fire Department, Sequoyah VFD, Chattanooga Hamilton County Rescue responded to the scene to assist in the rescue. Rescue efforts began at 11 a.m. and ended at 5 p.m.
The man was transported by Hamilton County EMS to Erlanger for further treatment.
No additional information was given on the injured male party.
