Larkin Brown, a rising sophomore at Girls Preparatory School, has been invited to attend USRowing's Junior National Development Camp for three weeks this summer at Connecticut College. She will join 40 other rowers from across the country in what USRowing describes as a "Rowing Laboratory" where the focus is on “building a multidimensional skill set in a controlled environment.”

Brown was a member of the GPS Varsity 8+ that participated in last October’s Head of the Charles in Boston, one of the most prestigious head races in the world. She was also in the boat that won the seventh straight Carney Cup competition with Baylor School in April.

Realizing that there was not a nearby I.D. camp where Brown could be timed on a 2k-erg test or be observed in other technical tests, GPS Rowing Coach Megan McCourt filmed Brown’s 2k-erg test, a speed test of endurance and strength. She also filmed her rowing on the water so the Development Camp coaches could see her technical work. After the film was sent to the coaches to review, Brown received an email with an acceptance letter.

"Larkin has showed a spark since the first day I met her," said Coach McCourt. "Not only does she have the physical attributes every rowing coach looks for in a great rower, but she also has the mental toughness, drive, and team spirit that makes for a truly successful athlete. Because of Larkin's solid work ethic, talent, and competitive drive, she was able to achieve her goal of being selected to the USRowing Junior Women's Development Camp." Coach McCourt added that the young rower will bring these skills back to GPS and share them with her teammates, helping build a stronger team back home.

“My goal is to attend this camp and learn additional skills to become a better and faster rower to help our team succeed next year,” says Brown. It is also the first step in reaching my future goal of making the Junior National Team.”

The camp’s on-water work emphasizes understanding the physics of moving a boat, as evenly as possible between sweep and sculling, and off-water time focuses on overall fitness, nutrition, strength, and dynamic stretching.
