The city of Soddy Daisy is getting ready for special events that will be taking place over the coming two weekends.
On Saturday, the annual Wall of Honor Ceremony will be held at Veteran’s Park. This year, 50 names will be added to the wall, one dating from the Civil War era and the rest from World War II to the present. These people that fought for the United States were all from Soddy Daisy and the surrounding areas.
The service will take place at 10 a.m. Following, will be a ceremony to dispose of old flags.
Pioneer Days at Poe’s Tavern will be held on Saturday, May 14, at Poe’s Tavern Historical Park, 9835 Dayton Pike, hosted by the Soddy, Daisy and Montlake Historical Association. Starting at 9 a.m. and lasting until 3 p.m., local craftsmen will demonstrate wood carving, quilting, blacksmithing and cast iron cooking among other things. There will also be music, free drinks and hotdogs, games for children and a booth for finding historical information about the area.
May 14 is also the date for the first Soddy Daisy farmer’s market of the year. It will continue every Saturday throughout the summer. On May 14 it will be held at Poe’s Tavern Park simultaneously with the Pioneer Days.
In regular business, City Manager Janice Cagle asked for and received approval from the commissioners to purchase a tractor for mowing roadsides in the city. The final price of $67,782.50 came in under the $75,000 that was included in the 2016 budget for the equipment.
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Soddy Daisy Commission is May 19.
