UTC's McLennan 5-Over At NCAA Regionals

  • Thursday, May 5, 2016
Chattanooga Mocs senior golfer Emily McLennan shot 5-over par 77 in the opening round of the NCAA Shoal Creek Regionals just outside Birmingham. The Australia native carded just one birdie under windy conditions on Shoal Creek Country Club.

"The course is playing long with a few par 4s over 400 yards,” she shared. “The wind really started to pick up. From the six or seventh hole onward, it became ridiculous out there. When you're playing a 400-plus-yard par 4 straight into the wind, it makes it incredibly difficult to get some birdies."

She was 1 over after a birdie on the par 5 sixth.
The wind picked up allowing eight pars and four bogeys the rest of the way.

"I hit the ball pretty well today,” she continued. “I hit my irons really well, but I just wasn't making any putts. I hit a lot of good putts that didn't go in and really should have gone in. Once those putts start dropping, I can make some birdies and the round will go a little better...a little easier.

“Tomorrow's moving day, so I have the opportunity to post a good score and put myself in good position.”

Vanderbilt’s Jenny Hahn is the leader at -2. She’s up two over Kacie Komoto (Northwestern) and Maddie McCrary (Oklahoma St.) at E. The average score for the 96-player field was 78.42.

"It was windy yesterday in the practice round,” McLennan added. “Because the course is in a valley, the wind just swirls a lot. There were times today where you set up hitting a shot into the wind and then all of the sudden, it changes and it's downwind.

“It made it very difficult to pick the right club."

No. 8 Northwestern is the team leader at 296 (+8). No. 22 Florida State is second at 299, one clear of No. 25 Tennessee with a 300.

The second round opens on No. 10 for McLennan with a 9:15 a.m. (CDT) tee time. NCAA Championship Central, live scoring and pairings are linked above.
