Sale Creek Principal Clears The Air

  • Sunday, June 12, 2016

I have always distanced myself from the political bantering that often occurs before elections, but this time I've been called out. My character has been attacked.

Commissioner Randy Fairbanks has publicly stated that he began working with the Hamilton County Public Works Department 6-8 months ago to secure a football field for Sale Creek because Sale Creek's Principal Tobin Davidson is like a son to former Commissioner Fred Skillern and hasn't gotten over Mr. Fairbanks beating him in the last election. He said Mr. Davidson will not talk to him. So, let me clear the air.

As for Mr. Skillern, I cherish the relationships that I've built with Mr. Skillern as well as numerous other wonderful people in the Sale Creek/Soddy Daisy communities. I consider these relationships blessings. As for the so-called ill feelings over the past election, this happened two years ago and it never crosses my mind. As a matter of fact I would like to go on record to say that I accept, respect, and appreciate the work that Randy Fairbanks does as Commissioner of District 1.

As for the refusal to talk to Commissioner Fairbanks, I beg to differ. As the parents and students of Sale Creek Middle/High as well as Soddy Daisy Middle School can attest, I will meet with anybody at anytime. I dodge no one.

Lastly, but most importantly, to insinuate that I would jeopardize the acquisition of a football field for Sale Creek because of bitterness over a two-year-old election is beyond ridiculous. I have watched our students attend classes in portables since 1999, and I have begged to secure outside venues to host football, baseball, and soccer contests. I consider myself a true advocate for our students.

I would also like to address the Sale Creek Football Field project. I cannot and will not attempt to discuss any dealings that did not personally involve myself. Mrs. Thurman has been in contact with me for the last four years trying to secure a football field for Sale Creek. Initially, discussions to purchase land adjacent to the campus was being discussed. Now we are preparing the land at North Hamilton Elementary. Mrs. Thurman has been very instrumental in this process.

Four years ago upon the announcement of the birth of high school football at Sale Creek, Mayor Coppinger visited the school and vowed to help in any way with the program. He has not wavered one bit on his word, and I have spoken to him numerous times with him about the project.

So, Commissioner Fairbanks, if it is credit, praise, and attaboys that you desire, the opportunities for these are limitless in this project alone. We will soon be in need of a sprinkler system, sod, bleachers, and lighting. I give you my word that credit and praise will follow any and all assistance. I look forward to hearing from you soon, and I will promptly reply.

Now that I've cleared the air, I challenge all stakeholders to leave their agendas behind and get the kids what they need and deserve.
