The Fairyland Flash made a strong statement on Monday evening as to who would be the best team in the Chattanooga Area Swim League’s Red division and the proud team from Lookout Mountain has that honor following an impressive victory over the Country Club Wavemakers.

The meet was delayed for almost an hour right after the freestyle races had been completed and it was called off for good shortly after the freestyle relays began, but victory was in the bag for the Flash at that point.

Fairyland’s margin of victory was 68 points as the final score was 367-299.

With the win, the Flash is all alone in first place with three wins and no defeats while Country Club is knotted in second place with teams from Country Club, Ringgold and Calhoun as all are 1-1.

Other winners on Monday included Ooltewah, Red Bank, Signal Mountain, Calhoun and the Waterdogs.  Idle Dalton is the only team in the Blue division still unbeaten while the Waterdogs are the only other unbeaten team in the league as they lead the White division at 3-0.

The Wavemakers were missing some key swimmers and the most glaring impact came in the relays where there were some age groups where they simply didn’t have enough for a team.

On the other hand, the Flash was almost at full strength and that may have been the biggest difference in the meet.

“It’s been a great meet and it’s always better when it’s close,” said Fairyland coach Alice Revenig toward the end of the action.

“We were behind at the beginning, but we showed a lot of determination as we stayed the course on what we were doing.  We’ve been working hard in practice and it’s nice to see the results of correcting mistakes we had been making.

“We expected this to be one of our toughest meets, but one advantage we had was having most of our kids here.  And it’s always nice to be swimming at home,” she concluded with a smile.

Country Club coach Stan Corcoran knew his team would be shorthanded coming in, but he used it as a great way to see just what others could do in competitive situations.

“We have a lot of kids gone tonight, so we’re just trying to get a feel for what kids can do in other events,” he explained.

“Fairyland Club has a really good team as they do a good job of covering all the events, but I feel good about where we are at the start of the second week.  I knew we’d be missing some relay teams and it’s tough to win a meet when those folks are missing and that’s the case.

“The score is a lot closer than I expected it to be, so we just need to focus on what we’re doing well and try to improve on other areas.  But I like watching them improve and seeing them get better with more experience,” Corcoran added.

The Flash had a two-point lead at 67-65 following the opening freestyle races before the Wavemakers took charge at 119-115 after the breaststroke.

That lead switched again following the medley relays as Fairyland pulled ahead at 171-163 and the Wavemakers never led again.

The Flash had four swimmers with 17 points – they didn’t get a chance for those last two – and they included Benjamin Bevill, William Jackson, Ellie Taliaferro and Anna Ward.

Country Club had Meghan Royal with 19 points while Julia Quernemoen followed with 17.  Sofia Bell and Lydia Bohannon were next with 15 points apiece.

Country Club will be back home on Thursday for a meet with Big Ridge while Fairyland will have a bye on Thursday and next Monday before traveling to Big Ridge on Thursday, June 23.
