Request Withdrawn For Jr. Food Store At Foot Of Signal Mountain

  • Tuesday, June 14, 2016

A request for rezoning has been withdrawn for a food store at the foot of Signal Mountain that was opposed by some residents.

The City Council on Tuesday night accepted the withdrawal, though some residents wanted the request denied. Officials said the effect is the same for withdrawal or denial - the request cannot be brought again for nine months.

An attorney said the grocery chain "realizes that the battle was not going to be won."

The Planning Commission had recommended denial of the rezoning following statements from the opposition.

Jr. Food Stores officials earlier said the chain was planning a move into the Chattanooga market and has also bought a site on the east side of town and is looking at others.

A store official earlier said the store near the base of Signal Mountain would be 10,500 square feet and bring a boost in taxes. It would provide 40 new jobs.

He said a traffic study is being conducted and he does not believe it would require a traffic light at Glendale Dr. leading to the Glendale neighborhood.

He said it would require grading a hill at the rear and building a large well or two walls.

Wendi Morgan said it is a dangerous site just where vehicles come off steep Signal Mountain. She said it would be "a huge" operation affecting those living in the 34 homes in Glendale.

Another resident said wildlife, including a peregrine falcon, would be displaced by the cutting into the hillside.

The store official said the current driveway to the property would be moved to a safer spot.

He said the store would sell gas, but was mainly a convenient market.

Officials said, "While the market was going to be convenient, it wasn't a convenience store. It was going to offer fresh vegetables, locally grown produce and meat at grocery store prices."
