Comptroller’s Guide Helps Explain New Federal Education Law

  • Thursday, June 16, 2016
The Comptroller’s Office of Research and Education Accountability has created an online guide that they say makes it easier to understand the new federal K-12 education law that replaced 2001’s No Child Left Behind Act.

The Every Student Succeeds Act gives states and local governments more flexibility and control over K-12 education policy. ESSA was passed by Congress and signed by the President in December 2015.

The Comptroller's guide combines infographics, charts, and embedded illustrations into one easy-to-navigate webpage.
The guide also helps explain ESSA’s impact on upcoming changes to Tennessee education policy over the next few years.

The guide breaks the new law into six categories: teachers, testing, accountability, intervention, funding, and innovation.

An education law timeline, which looks back at milestones in education law at the federal level and in Tennessee between 1965 and 2015, is included in the Comptroller’s online guide. A future timeline is available as well, with key dates listed for ESSA’s implementation in Tennessee through the 2017-18 school year.

Find the online guide on the Comptroller's website at http://www.comptroller.tn.gov/OREA/essa.
