Former Student Favors Patti Skates For School Board - And Response

  • Friday, June 17, 2016

I am writing in regards to Dr. Patti Skates running for District 1 School Board.

I met Dr. Skates when I was a freshman at Red Bank High School in 2011.  She was my World Geography teacher.  Dr. Skates loved her students through being fair and setting high expectations.  She has supported me through my high school years.  When I became a teacher, Dr. Skates sought me out and invited me to be in her sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma, Alpha Chapter.  Dr. Skates has been a huge role model and inspiration for me as an educator. In fact, her guidance is one of the reasons I chose to be a teacher.

Based on my personal experience both as her student and as a fellow educator, I know Dr. Skates has a passion for students, teachers, and Hamilton County schools.  I have no doubt that Dr. Skates is what District 1 needs for the School Board.

I will be voting for and supporting Patti Skates for school board. The best way to choose a candidate for any position is to look at their history.  Patti has been a great role model for hundreds, maybe thousands, of students.  And, she has always treated people with dignity and respect.  She is a professional, even when there may be a difference of opinion.

People have asked why I have attended her rallies.  Why should I even care?  This next school year, I will have grandchildren in the school system.  I want a representative to be involved in the schools with teachers and principals.  Patti has pledged to work hard with them and trust their opinions.

The fiasco with Rick Smith may have been the result of lowering the standards that were in place to begin with.  The past buyouts of other superintendents have cost taxpayers dearly.  Change is due.  Vote for Dr. Patti Skates.
