Master Gardeners Has Program On Daylillies

  • Friday, June 17, 2016

The Master Gardeners of Hamilton County (MGHC), in association with the University of Tennessee Extension, add to their outreach programs with free monthly gardening classes open to the public.  On Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon, the topic will be “All About Daylilies” presented by master gardener Peggy Dyer.

MGHC classes take place at the UT Extension, Agricultural Service Center, 6183 Adamson Circle, located off Bonnie Oaks Drive.  For additional information, visit www.mghc.org.

Peggy Dyer said, “June is the beginning of the two best months for this backbone of the garden -- colorful and versatile daylilies.  Each bloom last only one day, hence the name, but their multiple blooms last for many weeks, making a striking show of bright colors in the garden landscape.  Daylilies are a perennial plant, meaning one that returns every year, and are major attractors to the many beneficial insects and hummingbirds that seek out the nectar these plants provide.  Once established, daylilies require little care and provide a dramatic backdrop for annuals and other plants season after season.  This class will demonstrate that even amateur gardeners can have a show of daylilies among their plantings.  Whether in bright sun or part shade, daylilies will brighten your garden wherever they grow.”

Master Gardeners of Hamilton County is a non-profit, educational, volunteer organization that plays an important role in the civic life of Chattanooga and the surrounding area.  Among the many on-going landscaping and garden partnerships undertaken by MGHC are: Audubon Acres, Bonnie Oaks Arboretum, Reflection Riding Arboretum and Nature Center, Chattanooga Area Food Bank, Chattanooga Aquarium and Hummingbird Garden, Chattanooga Zoo, and Siskin Children’s Garden.
