odi Johnson, 23, pleaded guilty to shooting Roger Heard in the face in June of 2015. He was sentenced to three years in the Tennessee Department of Corrections by Judge Tom Greenholtz on Monday.
Prosecutor Kristen Spires said on June 18, 2015, the defendant “stepped forward and fired one shot,” hitting the victim in the cheek and causing “some damage to his jaw.”
In July of 2015, Heard testified in court that he went to the defendant’s house on Walden Avenue to pay a $15 sports bet with an exchange of a small amount of marijuana. He said he spoke to the defendant’s older brother before Kodi Johnson stepped forward, pointed a revolver, and shot him in the face.
Mr. Heard said he then drove himself home and had a friend take him to Erlanger Hospital.
The state said some of the statements made about the incident were perhaps false, including the sports bet.
Originally charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and employing a firearm during a dangerous felony, all but Johnson’s aggravated assault charge have been dismissed.
The state said this was due to a number of reasons, including the fact that prosecutors were not sure of the victim’s “willingness to cooperate.”
