Christopher Shipley, 56, who lives at a homeless camp on Pine Street, was arrested after robbing and attempting to cut another homeless man’s throat near the Carter Street City Cafe Diner, police said.

Victim Ramon Ruiz told officers he was walking with a beer toward City Cafe at about 3 a.m. on Sunday when a man came out of the bushes at the corner or Pine Street and MLK Boulevard. He said the suspect demanded the victim give him his beer, but when the victim offered to buy him one, the suspect grabbed him by his throat and tried to cut him with a knife.

Mr. Ruiz said he was able to block the suspect’s attempt to cut his throat with his left hand. He said the man took $100 in cash from his wallet before fleeing on foot. He said he chased the suspect to Chestnut Street before returning to the scene, where he saw an officer at City Cafe and told him what had happened.

The victim told police he knew the suspect, but did not know his name. He said the man sleeps in the bushes where the incident occurred.

Mr. Ruiz needed stitches for a laceration to his left middle finger and was transported to Erlanger Hospital.

Officers canvased the area where the incident occurred and came up with Shipley’s name. He was picked out in a photo lineup and arrested around noon the same day on a charge of aggravated robbery.
