For the last week, I have been called upon to be the scorekeeper for the East Brainerd Nighthawks 5-6 year old all-star baseball team. My grandson Coleman plays for the Nighthawks and my son Davey is one of the coaches. When I agreed to take the position for the next few weeks, little did I know that the job also included being the dugout coach; the one who is in charge of the team while all the other coaches are on the field.

The last several games have produced some memorable events and quotes.

Here are a few of them:

"Where is my cap? (Heard more than a dozen times during an hour-long game.)

"I can't find my glove."
"Look in your bucket."
"It's not there."
"Your glove or your bucket?"
"I don't know."

" I have to go to the bathroom."
"You're on deck to hit. You need to hold it."
"I really, really need to go."

"What's an RBI?"
"How many RBI's do I have?"
"You don't have any yet. The game just started."

"Where is my name on that book?"
"Right here."
"Why did you color in that box?"
"Because you scored a run."
"Why does he have two colored in boxes?"
"Because he scored two runs. You have only scored one."

"What's a Grand Slam?"
"When will they say, BALL GAME?"
"When the game is over."
How long will that be?"

"Are we winning?"
"Yes."
"What's the score?"
"Fourteen to seven."
"Do we have fourteen and the other team have seven?"
"Yes...that's why we're winning."

"I really need to go to the bathroom."

"Will you tie my shoe?"

"Who bats first this time?"

"I need to go see my Mom."

"Guys stop kicking up that dust."
"Pay attention to the game boys."
"Stop pouring Gatorade on the ground."

"I can't buckle my belt."

"Did you see me slide?"

"My mom is taking me to see 'Finding Dory' tomorrow."

"Is the game over yet?"
"No it's just the third inning."
"What inning is next?"

"Stop drinking my Gatorade."
"Why are you eating nachos? We're in the middle of a game."

"What color uniforms will we wear tomorrow?"
"I don't know. Let's worry about that when this game is over."
"Get back in the dugout boys."

"What's your name?"
(Coleman says, "That's my GrandRandy....Ole Butt-Face."
