Boynton Lions Fundraiser Brings Back Classic Films At The Ringo Theater

  • Wednesday, June 29, 2016

Classic films are the focus of summer fun at the Ringo Theater.  The Boynton Lions Club and the Ringgold Convention and Visitors Bureau will host the event on Tuesday at the Ringgold Depot.

“The Lions Club and CVB are bring back the popular event they hosted a few months ago for summer remembering when Catoosans came to town, shopped, enjoyed a meal, and saw Hollywood’s latest heartwarming motion pictures at the Ringo Theater which served the community beginning in the 1930s,” said Rhonda Johnson, Main Street manager, “The Ringo Theater sat on Nashville Street near the Ringgold Depot and the building was destroyed by fire in the 1970s. Our classic theater venue now lives on in the historic surroundings of the Ringgold Depot.”

The first of two separate films showing is the classic Yankee Doodle Dandy at 6:15 p.m.  Yankee Doodle Dandy premiered in 1942 American biographical musical film about Broadway musical legend George M. Cohan. It stars James Cagney, Joan Leslie, Walter Huston and Richard Whorf. The film won three Academy Awards including Best Actor, Best Music and Best Sound Recording. Yankee Doodle Dandy was selected for preservation in the United States Library of Congress film registry.

Boynton Lions Club board of directors member Randall Franks, who is also known for his work as a film and TV actor, said their club, is excited to bring these classic Hollywood stars to Ringgold through their special event.  “This is one of the most interesting of the patriotic films,” he said. “Besides showing an interesting side of James Cagney, it has the amazing music of George Cohan.”

The second film showing is Father Goose at 8:35 p.m.  Father Goose is a 1964 American romantic comedy starring Cary Grant, Leslie Caron and Trevor Howard. The Academy Award winner for Best Screenplay derives   The title derives from  the codename assigned to Grant's character. The film won an Academy Award for its screenplay. T

Lions Club president Richmond Blackwell, who encouraged the club to begin featuring classic movies in Ringgold, said Father Goose is an interesting comedic film with the backdrop of World War II.   “It's name comes from the codename assigned to Grant's World War II character. For the good-hearted romantics wishing to share in some of the hilarity of Cary Grant in one of the best war era films, this is a perfect chance."

Movie concessions will be available.

Boynton Lions Vision committee chair John Long said the club could only do what it does with the public’s help.  “The gift of sight means so much and for about $100, thanks to our local optometrist partner we can help someone see well again,” he said. Our summer event will help us do many of our community projects including vision.

A Ringo Theater helps reach that goal through its event partners including Blackwell Automotive, Hamilton Glass Co. of Dalton, Ga, Ryan Stinson Music, Dr. Denise Shepard, Weeks and Peters Insurance, and others, he said.

“We were hoping to have at least 15 event partners to step forward,” Mr. Franks said. “There is still time to help by being a partner whether you have a business or are an individual. There will be an opportunity for attendees to donate to the cause at both events that evening as well as a place to donate your old glasses to be also be re-used.”

The event is free but both showings are ticketed separately since seats are limited. Numerous tickets have been made available through event partners, but tickets will be made available at the door while they last.

"Friends, I know we all have many things on our mind and our available cash is being pulled in many directions this time of year,” Mr. Franks said. “I hope you will consider though that we have people in need right here in Catoosa County who need one basic element which can help them improve their lives and that of their families by just being able to read more clearly, drive more safely, and enjoy what is around them with greater clarity. You can change one person’s life. Help us give the gift of sight.”

To become an event partner, which is shared with attendees, e-mail Randall Franks at rfrankscatoosa@gmail.com or to find out more information call Main Street Manager Rhonda Johnson at 706.935-3061.
