The scholarships, awarded annually in two different categories, engineering students, and students studying to be teachers, are in honor and memory of Mario C. Charles, who was an engineer with TVA, and his wife, Grace B. Charles, who was a teacher in the Chattanooga public school system.

Award made to an engineering student is Keith Schaal of Paris, Tenn., a rising senior.

Winners in the education category are: Hailey O’Connor, a rising junior from Nashville; Kelsey Batts, a rising senior from Memphis; Bailey Hall, a rising senior from Harrison; and Brenda Morris, a rising senior from Knoxville.

Other members of the Board of Directors of the Charles Foundation include Dr. John Trimpey, a retired professor and dean from UTC; Robert Moss, an engineering graduate of UTC; and Richard W. Buhrman, an Honors graduate of the University of Chattanooga.
