Chattanooga Girls Rock Camp Showcase Concert and fundraiser, featuring camper bands and Beverly “Guitar” Watkins of Atlanta, will take place on Saturday, July 23, 1 p.m. at the Revelry Room. Doors will open at noon.
In its inaugural year, CGRC campers, many with little or absolutely no experience, will form bands, take instrument instruction classes, and write their own songs - all within the span of one week.
The young female campers will also participate in empowering supplementary workshops and presentations including DJing, Media Literacy, Body Positivity, Videography, Recording, and Screen Printing. The week at camp will culminate in a public performance, where the girls will play the original music they created and rehearsed during camp.
The CGRC Showcase Concert will serve as a fundraiser for next year's camp and any programming planned for the interim. Admission is $10. Pre-sales are available via the Revelry Room's website and have been announced on the Chattanooga Girls Rock Facebook page and website. You can also purchase tickets during normal operating hours at the Revelry Room or Track 29 Box Office, or at the door on the day of the show.
"The concert will feature guest artist opener Beverly "Guitar" Watkins of Atlanta, a 76-year-old blues guitarist with a long and storied career. Playing professionally since high school, she is a true pioneer who has toured with Piano Red/Dr. Feelgood, and opened for Ray Charles, B.B. King, and James Brown. She is a force to be reckoned with and we are proud to bring her to Chattanooga in following our goal of supporting and amplifying the voices and presence of women musicians," officials said.
