“Today’s round robin 7 on 7 was perfect for our kids. We have 9th and 10th graders who have never played a down of football and these games today gave them a chance to go against kids from other schools who have played varsity football under the lights on Friday nights.”

Mark Mariakis, head football coach Chattanooga Christian on Friday’s Rumble on the River II held at Baylor

“We got better on defense throughout the afternoon and our yong kids got some good game situation experience,” said first year Whitwell coach Tracy Malone as his players were leaving Baylor’s Heywood Stadium late Friday afternoon.

“We were shell shocked in the first game against Chattanooga Christian (gave up three touchdown passes), but our guys realized they were out of position much of that first 30 minute game. We made some adjustments and did better in each game after that.

“Facing these teams today was good for us.”

The eight teams which participated in the 7 on 7 passing contests were host Baylor, Whitwell, Brainerd, Chattanooga Central, Red Bank, Bradley Central, Chattanooga Christian and Gordon Lee.

Baylor coach Phil Massey said, “These 7 on 7 games with no score being kept helps our young kids get their feet wet in game-type situations. We have several players who needed to get some snaps against folks other than their teammates and this was the purpose of the 7 on 7.”

CCS coach Mark Mariakis stated: “Our goals are to give a great effort and execute properly and find some depth. We only have four seniors and our 9th and 10th graders have never played a down of football so this was good for us today.”

Looking Forward: Monday July 25 – Official Start of Practice … first day players can be in full pads
