Cleveland State's Continuing Education Department Announces Fall Line Up

The Department of Continuing Education at Cleveland State Community College has a new line up of classes for fall. The upcoming classes are as follows:

 ?         Beginning Microsoft Excel

This beginning Microsoft Excel course is designed to help individuals gain basic skills in working and implementing Excel software into their personal or work environment. The course covers creating, entering and editing data, using functions, formatting worksheets, creating charts and printing spreadsheets. Classes will meet on Tuesdays, August 9-16 from 6-8 p.m. in room 120 of the CSCC Library. The cost of the course is $120.

?          The Koontz Cram Course ACT Prep

Want an ACT score you can smile about? Sign up today!  Thousands of Tennessee high school students were turned away this year.  Let us help you raise your ACT score by showing you how to attack the test with proven strategies. Classes will meet on Saturdays, August 27–September 1 in room 113 of the George R. Johnson Cultural Heritage Center. The cost of the course is $375. (See mycs.cc/grow for times.)

?          Beginning portraits in pencil 

Have you always wanted to learn to draw life like pencil portraits? This is the class for you. The class will be working from photographs, with emphasis on proportions, perspective, texture, shading and contrast. Classes will meet on Tuesdays, August 30-October 4 from 6-8 p.m. in room 115 of the L. Quentin Lane Gymnasium. The cost of the course is $69.

 ?          TWRA Hunter Safety Course  


This class is offered Monday, August 1 – Thursday, August 4 from 6-9 p.m.  in room113 of the George R. Johnson Cultural Heritage Center. (See TWRA website to register)

?          Parenting and Divorce Workshops

This course will fulfill the requirements of the court mandated parenting class authorized by Chapter 557 of  the Public Acts of 1997 and can be found at T.C.A. Sec 36-6-401.  A certificate will be given at the end of class to fulfill the requirements of the Court Mandated Parenting Classes for dissolution of marriage with minor children. ?          English as a second language Part 1

This beginning ESL course is for the adult learner who is looking to improve their conversational and written  English skills. Classes will meet on Tuesdays, August 30-October 4 from 6-8 p.m. in room 105 of the Career Education Building. The cost of the course is $129.

Communicating with patients, clients, customers or vendors is too important for language barriers to get in the way.  Whether you are learning Spanish for the first time or you are expanding existing knowledge of the language, Spanish in the Medical Industry course will help you become a better communicator for your Medical profession. Classes will meet Thursday, September 8 – October 27 from 6-8 p.m. in room 125 of the Mary T. Barkers Humanities Building. The cost of the course is $299.

Who Should Enroll:  This two-part series led by Suzanne Burrell, CFP®, teaches fundamental financial principles needed to prepare you to retire on your terms.  Whatever life stage, whatever financial circumstances, this course will help you figure out where you are, where you want to be, and what you need to do to get there. This class meets on Tuesday, September 13 from 6-7:30 p.m. in room 113 of the George R. Johnson Cultural Heritage Center. The cost is $39 per couple or $39 per individual if taking alone.

?          Retire on your own terms Part 2

Terms of Retirement: What will your retirement look like? How much money do you need? When should you retire? What needs to happen before your retire?

This is the second part of the series led by Suzanne Burrell, CFP®. The class meets on Tuesday, September 20 from 6-8 p.m. in room 113 of the George R. Johnson Cultural Heritage Center. The cost is $39 per couple or $39 per individual if taking alone.

?          Investing 101 and 102: Understanding market investing

Who Should Enroll:  This class taught by Suzanne Burrell, CFP®, explores Market Investing in layman’s terms with the goal of reducing the “fear and spin” often heard in the media.  If you’d like to feel more comfortable when your investments go surfing with the Bulls and the Bears, you’ll benefit from this overview. This class meets on Tuesday, October 4 from 6-8 p.m. in room 113 of the George R. Johnson Cultural Heritage Center. The cost for the course is $49 per couple or individual if taking alone

?          401ks, IRAs, and Roth IRAs:   Can you say “Tax savings”?

Who Should Enroll:  This class taught by Suzanne Burrell, CFP®, dissects the most commonly used retirement accounts explaining the benefits and pitfalls of these frequently discussed accounts.  If you own one of these (or would like to), you need to be in this class. This class meets on Tuesday, October 11 from 6-7:30 p.m. in room 113 of the George R. Johnson Cultural Heritage Center. The cost is $39 per couple or individual if taking alone

?          Are All Your Ducks in a Row?  The “Before You Retire” Review

Who Should Enroll:  Retirees’ greatest fear is “Will I run out of money?”  This class taught by Suzanne  Burrell, CFP®, would benefit those who are approaching retirement, or perhaps already in retirement, and want to know “Is my financial house is in order?”  If not, what should you be doing to improve your financial situation? The class is offered on Tuesday, October 18 from 6-7:30 p.m. in room 113 of the George R. Johnson Cultural Heritage Center. The cost is $39 per couple or individual if taking alone.

?          What Millennials Need to Know About Their Finances: Do It Now

Who Should Enroll:  This class would most benefit Millennials who want to get their finances in order.  Taught by Suzanne Burrell, CFP®, this class will be offered on Tuesday, October 25 from 6-7:30 p.m. in room 113 of the George R. Johnson Cultural Heritage Center. The cost of the course is $39 per couple or individual if taking alone.

?          Conversational Spanish for beginners

Communicating with clients, customers, patients or while traveling is too important for language barriers to  get in the way.  Whether you are learning Spanish for the first time or you are expanding existing knowledge of the language, this conversational Spanish for beginners course will help you become a better communicator. The class meets on Tuesdays, September 6 – October 25 from 6-9 p.m. in room 125 of  the Mary T. Barker Humanities Building. The cost of the course is $99.

?          American Sign Language

Enrollees will get an introduction and understanding of the deaf community and their beautiful  language. Participate in the enjoyment and fun of learning the alphabet, numbers and introducing yourself to the deaf.  Learn the history of the language as well as the myths associated with it. Classes will meet on Tuesdays, September 13 – October 18 from 6-8 p.m. in room 115 of the George R. Johnson Cultural Heritage Center. The cost of the course is $65.

?          English as a second language Part 2

This is the second part of a two-part series. This intermediate ESL course is for the adult learner who is looking to improve their conversational and  written English skills.  This class meets on Tuesdays, October 11- November 15  from 6-8 p.m. in room 105 of the Career Education Building. The cost of the course is $129.

?          Welding Fundamentals

Develop your entry-level welding skills in this introductory class that covers knowledge, safety, and practical application of welding technologies. Learn oxy-fuel, gas metal arc shielded metal arc, and plasma arc processes through lecture and hands-on practice. Students will practice and work towards becoming proficient welding in the 1F/1G Flat and 2F/2G Horizontal Welding. (Registration Coming Soon—visit mycs.cc/grow for details.)

?          Blue print Reading for welding technicians

Students learn to read a scale and interpret welding and shop drawings. This course is a must for anyone in the welding industry, and an emphasis is placed on welding symbols. (Registration Coming Soon—visit mycs.cc/grow for details.)

?          One day welding

In this eight-hour class, we will cover the basics of welding using MIG welders, to have  you safely and effectively ready to start your very own furniture, bicycle chopper, or top fuel dragster project. We will be emphasizing skills and techniques that will make welding more accessible to those without extensive workshops, toolsets, or experience. During the class we will cover safety, metal procurement and selection, welding technique, and finishing/rust prevention techniques. ?          Intermediate Microsoft Excel

In this intermediate level Excel 2013 course you learn how to customize the ribbon in Microsoft Excel and work with large worksheets and what-if analysis.  You will also learn to adjust the view using split and freeze as well as manage multiple worksheets. The class meets on Friday, August 19 from 8 a.m-noon in the Monroe Center Computer Lab. The cost of the course is $150.
