Albert P. Kershaw, of Hixson, died on Friday, July 22, 2016. 

He was a long-time resident of Hixson and was a retired pharmacist. 

He was born in Murray Cross, Al. Albert was a graduate of DeKalb County High School, Fort Payne, Al., where he lettered in football and was named All-State. He attended Livingston College before joining the Army, where he was stationed in Osaka, Japan until 1948.  He joined the U.S. Air National Guard Alabama and became a navigator and achieved the rank of captain.  He served at Dreux AFB outside Paris in the early 60’s and was also involved in operations in Central America and the Bay of Pigs. 

He graduated in 1964 from Howard School of Pharmacy (now Samford).  Albert moved from Fort Payne to Hixson with his family in 1969 and was employed as a pharmacist with Access Drug.  He later went on to own his own drug store, Dallas Bay Drugs and after selling worked for Red Food Store.  He continued to work for various companies until his final retirement from Winn-Dixie in Harrison. 

Albert was a loving father and grandfather.  He was an avid reader of World War II nonfiction and fiction, an Alabama football fan and enjoyed modeling, especially airplanes and trains.  Albert was active in his retirement, often going to lunch with friends and very active in the lives and care of his grandchildren. 

Albert remained at home with his wife until he required care elsewhere.  He was kindly cared for at the Life Care of Red Bank for the last three and a half years.  The family sincerely thanks the staff at Red Bank Life Care for their dedication and service to Albert.

Albert was also preceded in death by parents, Hugh and Almeta Clayton Kershaw; his wife, Dorothy “Dot” Kershaw; son, Joe Kershaw; and sister, Nancy Ellison. 

Survivors include his son, Dan (Marisa McDonough) Kershaw of Hixson; step-daughters: Lisa Hurtt of Knoxville and Cyndi (J.C. Shumaker) Hurtt of Chattanooga and April (Robert) Frye of Harrison; step-son, Johnny (Carol) Hurtt of Ft. Payne; daughter-in-law, Julie (Jason) Dollar; grandchildren: Brennan Kershaw, Morgan Stiles, Cami Kershaw, Steve Sanders, Heather Johnson, Dustin Kershaw, Hadden Kershaw; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Joyce Stewart of Panama City, Florida and Grace Golden of Pell City, Alabama.

Graveside services will be at noon CDT on Friday at Mount Hermon Cemetery, Fort Payne, Al. 

Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday at Lane Funeral Home, Ashland Terrace.
