County Commissioner Marty Haynes said he favors having the nominee of the Republican caucus for the November election to be the interim District 3 county commissioner.
Commissioner Haynes will be leaving the commission as of Aug. 31. He will be sworn in as assessor of property on Sept. 1.
Commission Chairman Chester Bankston said he does not plan for the post to be filled, saying there would only be about a month left after advertising for the vacancy and interviewing candidates.
Commissioner Joe Graham said District 3 residents should not be without representation and he said the commission could face a 4-4 standoff on an important issue.
Commissioner Randy Fairbanks said he would favor going along with the wishes of Commissioner Haynes.
Commissioner Haynes said, "My opinion on an interim county commissioner for District 3 is the leaders of District 3 should select a possible interim commissioner. This is not my seat to give away. It belongs to the residents of District 3.
"The County Commission representative for District 3 has been a Republican for many years now. As a Republican, I believe our nominee from the Sept. 8 Caucus should be the interim Commissioner."
