Pair Receive Lengthy Prison Sentences For Robbing Credit Union In East Brainerd

  • Thursday, August 18, 2016

Two men have received lengthy prison sentences for robbing a credit union in East Brainerd on Aug. 31 of last year.

Stephen V. Beasley got 150 months.

Nicholas Cheaton got 124 months, but 24 months were tacked on because of a prior federal revocation.

The pair appeared before Judge Curtis L. Collier.

They earlier pleaded guilty to robbery and brandishing a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

The pair entered the Scenic City Community Credit Union at 7550 E. Brainerd Road around 11 a.m., prosecutors said. Both men had their faces covered with bandanas.

A customer told Judge Collier of Beasley putting one arm around him and pushing a gun into his side, while Cheaton jumped the counter and grabbed the money.

Cheaton put the stolen money into a backpack he had with him. He then entered the bank's vault area and stole a teller register box.

Beasley remained in the lobby until Cheaton came back out in about a minute, the government said.

GPS tracking devices in the stolen money led police to Cheaton's apartment. A responding officer ran into co-defendant Cheywan Copeland as she was trying to hide a backpack underneath a trash can at the complex. The bag had cash and a GPS tracking device in it.

Police surrounded the apartment complex and ordered all occupants outside. Beasley and Cheaton finally emerged after 20 minutes.

Inside their apartment police found a pile of wet clothes by a washing machine. Officers found a gray hoodie matching that worn by Cheaton.

Behind the washer, police found a .40-caliber Springfield Arms pistol loaded with five rounds. Next to the gun was a potato chip bag full of stacks of money and a second GPS locator.

Police retrieved a bandana from down the toilet bowl and a second bandana further down the pipes of the toilet bowl.

Ms. Copeland said she had driven a gold Buick to the apartment complex. An officer recalled noticing the Buick in the 7500 block of Shallowford Road, which was along the route indicated by the tracking device from the credit union to the apartments.

Prosecutors said Cheaton later gave a video-taped confession. He said he, Beasley and Ms. Copeland had driven in the Buick earlier that morning to the Federal Courthouse for a meeting with his probation officer. He said Ms. Copeland dropped them off at the credit union, then picked them up after the holdup.

Charges are still pending against Ms. Copeland.

The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney T.C. Makaya, the city of Chattanooga's Violent Crime and Gang Prosecutor.
