Attorney General Herbert H. Slatery III on Thursday announced Paul C. Ney, Jr. will join the Attorney General’s Office as chief deputy.

In his role as chief deputy attorney general, Mr. Ney will coordinate and supervise the substantive legal work of all five sections of the office.

“I am delighted Paul will be joining our leadership team,” General Slatery said. “His extensive legal and management experience in both the public and private sectors will add immediate value. He is well-known and well-respected throughout the state and I couldn’t be happier to welcome him to our office.”

Mr. Ney has practiced law for 31 years, most recently with Patterson Intellectual Property Law, P.C. in Nashville. His previous experience includes serving as Deputy General Counsel for the U.S. Department of Defense and Acting General Counsel of the Department of the Navy. More recently, Mr. Ney served as director of the Nashville Mayor’s Office of Economic and Community Development.

“I am grateful to General Slatery for giving me this opportunity to join the many outstanding lawyers in the Attorney General’s Office who are committed to serving our state and the people of Tennessee,” Mr. Ney said.

Mr. Ney graduated from Vanderbilt University School of Law, where he was elected to membership in the Order of the Coif and a member of the Editorial Board of the Law Review. He earned his undergraduate degree from Cornell University.

A Nashville resident, Mr. Ney’s community involvement has included Leadership Middle Tennessee, Leadership Nashville, Project Reflect, and Catholic Charities of Tennessee.

Mr. Ney succeeds Chief Deputy Lucy Honey Haynes, who recently retired after 34 years of service.
