Blood Assurance is teaming up with the Cherokee Area Council, Boy Scouts of America to host a week-long blood drive at Chattanooga-area donor centers and mobile blood drives. Community members who donate blood during Boy Scout Week, happening Tuesday, Sept. 6, through Friday, Sept. 9, will receive a Boy Scout Coupon Card valid at many restaurants and businesses across the region, including: Food City, Ace Hardware, Sportsman's Warehouse, Fazoli’s, Honey Baked Ham, Sport Clips, Express Oil Change & Tire Engineers, Arby’s, Chattanooga Lookouts, Smoothie King, Papa John’s and Sweet Frog. Along with the coupon card, donors will receive an “I Bleed” college football T-shirt as part of a coinciding campaign.

“Our goal at Boy Scouts of America is to prepare our Scouts to have a fulfilled life by giving back to the community,” said Scott Martin, council program director for the Cherokee Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. “Partnering with Blood Assurance will help our Scouts learn the importance of blood donation and how it benefits our community.”

The Cherokee Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America is headquartered in Chattanooga and serves more than 6,600 youth with the help of more than 1,700 volunteers across Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia. Throughout the years, Blood Assurance and the Boy Scouts have partnered to host numerous blood drives, and the organizations look forward to continuing their work together in the coming 2017 year, said officials.

“You don’t have to be a Scout to donate blood during Scout Week,” said Mindy Quinn, marketing manager for Blood Assurance. “We want to encourage all members of the community to help save local patients’ lives, and, as a thank you for each donation, donors will receive some great local deals from the Scout Coupon Card.”

Blood Assurance’s downtown donor center is at 705 East 4th St. across from the UTC McKenzie Arena. Its Gunbarrel donor center is at 1748 Gunbarrel Road near the Target Shopping Center behind FSG Bank and across from Chick-Fil-A. Its Hixson donor center is at 1920 Northpoint Blvd. across from Hobby Lobby between Lowe's and Home Depot.

To be eligible to donate, participants must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. The process usually takes about 30 minutes and includes a complimentary snack and an “I Bleed” T-shirt. Donors are asked to drink plenty of fluids - avoiding caffeine - and eat a meal that is rich in iron prior to donating.
