A Chattanooga man pleaded guilty in federal court on Thursday in connection with a charge that arose out of a home invasion on Jan. 16.

Danetrius Tolliver, 27, pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm.

He will be sentenced by Judge Sandy Mattice on Nov. 28.

Police said Tolliver was charged after he kicked in the back door of a residence near Lake Chickamauga and afterward discharged a gun.

A couple reported that they were at their residence on Starboard Drive when they heard someone ringing the front doorbell. Then the back door was kicked in.

Brandon Baldwin, 29, said a person he knows as DJ entered the residence. He said DJ went back out after he grabbed a baseball bat and began chasing him. He said during the chase he heard a gun go off.

Tolliver wrecked his blue Chevrolet Silverado while leaving the scene. He landed in a ditch near Hamill Road and Big Ridge Road, and he was taken into custody. A Smith & Wesson .40 caliber handgun was inside.

Tolliver said he had been drinking and using cocaine. He said he had been arguing with one of the residents and decided to "settle the score" with him.

He claimed that the gun went off accidentally as he was running from the residence.

Tolliver's record includes five burglary and three theft convictions as well as possession of hydrocodone for resale.
