Officer Kenny Moats of the Maryville Police Department was shot and killed while responding to a domestic violence call on Thursday. Officer Moats was with the department for over nine years and was currently serving as a drug enforcement agent.
Assistant Commissioner of Safety and Homeland Security David Purkey said, "It is with heavy heart that I express my condolences to the family and friends of Officer Kenny Moats of the Maryville Police Department. His passing has once again shed light on the dangers that law enforcement face daily as they protect and serve the people in their communities. Often times we take for granted that these men and women are sacrificing their lives to defend against the violence that is threatening the peaceful living in this great state.
"Officer Moats is to be commended for his bravery and commitment to serving the community of Maryville, and exemplifying the true character of a hero. To our friends and colleagues at the Maryville Police Department, we stand with you in support of Officer Moats, and all of your dedicated officers and staff that devote their lives to protecting their great city. I ask all Tennesseans to remember Kenny Moats and pray for the healing of his family.
"On behalf of the employees of the Department of Safety and Homeland Security we offer our support off all law enforcement across our great state. Thank you for your commitment to ensuring the safety and protection of our citizens."
