The Dalton State women’s soccer team opened its inaugural season Friday night with a come from behind 2-1 victory over Ave Maria University.

The Gyrenes took the early lead, but the Roadrunner captain Serena Delgado scored on a rebound goal to tie the score at one. The winning Dalton State score came when freshman Adriana Romera passed to Delgado who beat the defender for the winning goal.

“I am so happy for our Roadrunner ladies,” said DS Coach Kerem Daser. ”They have big hearts and they gave everything tonight.”

There was plenty of praise to go around after the game. “Our two captains, Delgado and freshman Selena Gomez, were outstanding. I was also very happy with freshman defender Alejandra Salaises and junior defender Jordan Bernard. Freshman Allysa Bilbrey, junior Rosie Lindo, and freshman Allie Hoxie were also solidin the middle of the park. Freshman Adriana Romera was dangerous all night and is getting better every day. Both keepers (juniors Asmara Holmes and Rachel Hardin) are solid and have big potential.”

“It was a great feeling to pull off the big win in our first ever regular season game,” added Daser.

The Roadrunners play again Saturday in Jacksonville. They play Florida’s Johnson &  Wales University at 7 p.m.
