John Russell “J.R.” Key, 85, of Athens, Tennessee, passed away Friday, August 26, 2016, at a local health care facility.
Born on Jan. 1, 1931 in McMinn County to the late Russell Hamilton and Annie Burke Key, he had lived in Michigan for 40 years and then at retirement, he returned to Tennessee. John loved singing, often times leading the singing at church and the Senior Center. He had an uplifting personality and great sense of humor. He loved spending time with his family and friends at the McMinn County Senior Center and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, He was preceded in death by his daughter, Belinda Key; first wife, Wilma Fern Key; sisters, Helen Smith, Evelyn Morrow, Elizabeth Myers and Catherine Hacker; and brothers, Arlie Key, Clifton Key and Donald Gene Key.
He is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Amanda Marie Porter-Key of Athens; sons, Johnny Key of Florida, David Key of Michigan and Tom Key of Florida; brothers, Billy Key and Charles Key, both of Athens; four grandchildren; and numerous special nieces, nephews, other extended family members and close friends.
A Celebration of Life and Home going for John “ J.R.” Key will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30 from the chapel of Serenity Funeral Home with Brother Keith Whiting officiating.
Family and friends will assemble at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 31 at Riceville Cemetery for the committal service.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 30 at the funeral home prior to the funeral hour.
Serenity Funeral Home and Cremation Center of Etowah is in charge of arrangements.
