Dr. Dewayne Thompson, chair of the Department of Business at Lee University, has assumed the office of chair of the 2016-17 Board of Directors for the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs, the only global accrediting body to accredit business, accounting, and business-related programs at all degree levels. The announcement was made at the ACBSP Annual Conference held in Atlanta. Dr. Thompson began his one-year term at the conclusion of that conference.

“I am both humbled and excited to chair the ACBSP Board of Directors as we serve our 13,000 members around the world,” said Dr. Thompson. “ACBSP aims to provide confidence to students who attend ACBSP-accredited programs that they will receive a quality business education. Working with an organization that shares my core values and purpose is an incredible opportunity.”

Dr. Thompson has been an active member of ACBSP for many years. He has been a member of the Board of Directors since 2014. He served as secretary, vice president, and president of ACBSP Region 3.  He has been an accreditation site team evaluator and mentor, and he has served as member and chair of various ACBSP committees, including the Marketing Committee. In 2013, Dr. Thompson was honored with both the International Best of Regions Excellence Award and the International Teaching Excellence Award.

“Dr. Thompson brings a wealth of educational leadership experience and business savvy to ACBSP, which is vital to our global strategy,” said Jeffrey Alderman, ACBSP president and CEO. “I anticipate the upcoming year will bring numerous opportunities and challenges, and we are so fortunate to have his steady hand guiding our growing organization.”

Dr. Thompson has worked as both a full-time faculty member and as an administrator in the Department of Business at Lee University over the past 35 years. Having served as a faculty member in business administration with a focus in management and ethics courses for 18 years, he moved to administrative positions for the past 15 years. In addition to administrative duties, he is a professor of management teaching to both undergraduate and graduate students.

He has taught or led seminars in Paraguay, Ukraine, and China. Additionally, other professional obligations required his travel to Italy, Germany, Austria, France, Cambodia, and Switzerland. He is involved in his local community serving on various boards and committees; moreover, he currently is serving on the local Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

ACBSP’s mission is to promote continuous improvement and recognize excellence in the accreditation of business education programs around the world. ACBSP is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation as a specialized accreditation agency for business education.
