Oscar Allen “Sonny” Fryar
Oscar Allen “Sonny” Fryar, 77 of Chattanooga, died on Thursday, September 22, 2016, in Nashville, Tennessee.
He was a lifetime resident of Chattanooga/Lookout Valley community and served in the U.S. Army National Guard. Sonny was a master barber and owner of the Pioneer Bank Building Barber Shop on Chestnut Street. He was named the mayor of Chestnut Street and was the co-founder of the Chestnut Street Athletic Club. Sonny was an avid golfer, known as the Legendary OAF of Brown Acres, and Atlanta Falcons season ticket holder and fan. He was a devoted supporter of UTC athletics and was of the Methodist faith. More than anything, Sonny was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather and friend to many.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Ada Laferna Fryar Maples; step-father, Lenord O. Maples; grandparents, James B. Fryar and Flossie Marie Fryar.
Sonny is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Freddie Harris Fryar; son, Lance “Bogey” Fryar and his wife, Kristy Fryar; daughters, Alana Gayle Fryar and Kellie Fryar Colston and her husband, James “Jimmy” Colston; grandchildren, Harrison and Hannah Colston and Gracey and Abbey Fryar; brother, Raymond “Bubba” Fryar; cousin, Eddie Whitehouse and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 26, in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be private.
