Vernon Eugene Boies, 90, of Hixson, died on Sunday, September 25, 2016, at his home.

Vernon was born September 13, 1926, to Violet and Dee Boies in Plainview, NE. He attended Fremont High School graduating with the class of 1944.  Following graduation, Vernon was employed by Plumfield Nursery until 1952 when he entered the U.S. Army.

Vernon was proud of his military service.  He served on the front lines in Korea, near the 38th parallel until 1953 when the conflict ended. Returning to the US, he marched in the 1953 New York Ticker Tape Parade honoring Korean troops.  He earned several service medals including two Bronze Stars and two commendation for superior service.  Vernon was active in the American Legion, Post 159.  He often spoke at school assemblies and community events until his failing health prevented his participation.

Shortly after Vernon’s Army discharge he moved to Chattanooga, to live with his aunt and uncle Mr. and Mrs. Rome Benedict.  He was employed by Morse Brothers Nursery, later joining and retiring from Perruso Landscaping.  Being an active person, retirement did not fit Vernon’s lifestyle so he started his own private landscape business, retiring again in 1995.

On August 27, 1961, Vernon joined Red Bank Baptist Church.  Later that day he and Jeanette began 55 years of dedicated marriage.  Vernon and Jeanette loved to square dance, visit family in Nebraska and North Carolina, search farm lands for Indian relics, and work crossword puzzles. His delight was reading the King James Bible aloud and did so following breakfast every day. He was an Ordained Deacon and member of the RBBC Fellowship Class.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, Dee and Violet Bowers Boies; brothers, Milton D. and Glenn Boies; brother-in-law, Donald Eix; sisters-in-law, Carol Pittman Boies, Opal Boies, and Barbara Bailey.

Vernon is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Jeanette Bailey Boies, Hixson; sister, Mardelle Eix; brother, Jerry Boies of Arlington, NE; two brothers-in-law, Gerald Bailey of Chattanooga, and David Bailey of Grass Valley, CA; two god children, Michael Putnam of Rossville, GA, and Michele Putnam Holtz of Chickamauga; many very special nieces, nephews, and also the dear families of Don Crane and Larry Putnam.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Chattanooga, Home Care Solutions, and Old Fashioned Hearts for their excellent care.  Especially for the loving care given by Ann Gilbert, Angela Parker, Cashenda Mitchell, Hospice Nurse Laura Noyes, CNA Jessica Morris, and Chaplin Christy Bonner.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 27, and 12-1 p.m. on Wednesday, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

A Celebration of Life Service for Vernon will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 28, at the North Chapel with Dr. Fred Steelman, Reverend Bill Harvey, and Hospice Chaplin Christy Bonner officiating.  Burial will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, you may send memorial gifts to Red Bank Baptist Church, TV and Media Ministry Fund, 4000 Dayton Blvd., Chattanooga, TN 37415 or to Bibles in the Schools, PO Box 4228, Chattanooga, TN 37405.
