A pregnant woman is facing multiple charges, including a viable fetus as a victim, after a wreck on Wilson Road.

Melanie D. Hawk, 24, of 1824 Bayhill Dr., Hixson, was also charged with DUI, failure to maintain lane, not having insurance, violating the implied consent law, felonious reckless endangerment, failing to exercise due care, a registration violation, a seat belt law violation, and an address violation.

In the incident on Saturday at 2:55 a.m., her gold Honda crashed in the 5200 block of Wilson Road. The vehicle ran off the side of the road while heading south and struck a concrete telephone pole. The pole was struck with such force that the front tire assembly was pushed into the driver's side compartment.

The interior dash was caved in on the driver's seat.

Ms. Hawk said she was five months pregnant.

Police said her pupils were constricted and she was sleepy and had droopy eyelids. She said she had a small dose of methadone earlier after getting up at 3 p.m.

Police said her speech was slurred and she did poorly on field tests.

She refused a blood alcohol test, but a search warrant was executed and one was obtained.
