Jimmy Templeton Will Be Missed At The City Yards

  • Wednesday, September 28, 2016

If only we had known about the Chattanooga City Council's planned retirement send off for Jimmy Templeton of Public Works, the room would have been filled to overflowing with his friends and admirers - including me.

I have had the honor of knowing and working with Jimmy since the 1970's (and also knew his father "Big Jim").  Jimmy was a strong right hand for whoever was in charge of keeping the city moving - especially in challenging times of snow, storms and other emergencies.  He was the "go to" guy for former mayors and heads of public works.  I know personally that he was a favorite of "late greats" such as Mayor Gene Roberts and Councilman Jack Benson - who was his high school principal way back in the day.

It was my particular honor to be around a few years ago to see Jimmy take on the role once held by his father and grandfather.  Anyone familiar with the responsibilities of local government will tell you that being in charge of The Yards is quite possibly the hardest job in the city.  It is a 24 hour per day, seven day per week marathon. He filled those shoes admirably and the city was truly blessed by his service.

It's bitter sweet to see him move into retirement - the end of one of the great dynasties of Chattanooga.  But I join with all those who benefited from his excellent and exemplary service in wishing him a long, healthy and joyful retirement.  I look forward to having him as a friend for many years to come.
