  • Wednesday, September 28, 2016
The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team gets ready for two Southern Conference matchups this weekend by hosting in-state rival ETSU on Friday before hitting the road to square-off with Mercer on Saturday.

Friday's match against ETSU will be played in Maclellan Gym at 6:00 p.m. UTC will travel to Macon, Ga., on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. match against Mercer in Hawkins Arena.

"We're excited to come home and face a really good opponent and a rival in ETSU," said coach Travis Filar.
"I think our team will re-group and respond well after the loss (Samford) … I'm excited to get deeper into conference play this weekend and face some quality opponents."

The Mocs dropped their last match on Friday to Samford in Birmingham, Ala. The Bulldogs captured a 3-0 (25-23, 25-13, 25-19) sweep of Chattanooga in the conference opener for both teams.

The Bucs come into the match holding a 9-5 overall record and a 1-1 mark in league play. ETSU has claimed two non-conference tournament titles by capturing their own Buccaneer Challenge and the Liberty Invitational, going 3-0 in both tournaments. They opened up conference play on the road at Furman and Samford on Friday and Saturday, dropping a five-set decision to Furman before earning a five-set win over Samford.

ETSU is led by head coach Lindsey Devine, who is in her 13th season with the volleyball program. She has compiled the most wins in program history and led the Buccaneers to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2012. Devine notched over 200 career wins at the helm of ETSU.

The Buccaneers lead the Southern Conference in multiple categories as a team including kills/set (14.0), attack percentage (.246) and assists/set (13.1). Senior Briana Allmon leads the attack for ETSU with 182 kills on the season while sophomore libero Hailey Aguilar anchors the defense leading the way with 204 digs. Freshman Kaela Massey ranks second in the Southern Conference with 1.16 blocks/set totaling 59 blocks on the year.

Mercer currently holds a 9-5 overall mar while playing to a 1-1 record in the Southern Conference. They play host to UNCG on Friday night before playing UTC on Saturday. After coming off a tournament win in their own Mercer Invite, the Bears opened up conference play with a 3-1 victory at The Citadel last Friday. They dropped a five-set match against Wofford, also on the road, on Saturday evening.

The Bears are led by head coach Damian Elder who enters his fifth season directing the volleyball program. Mercer is off to their best start since the 2008 season where they opened up the year 10-6. Elder led the Bears to the Southern Conference quarter-finals just a season ago.

Mercer features Southern Conference leaders in hitting percentage, service aces and blocks. Sophomore Paige Alsten leads the league with a .407 attacking percentage on 106 total kills. She also ranks atop the conference by averaging 1.28 blocks/set registering 60 blocks in 47 sets. Junior Emily Krogman is tied at the top of the SoCon in aces/set carrying a 0.40 average while collecting 22 aces on the season, second most in the conference.
