West, Betty Manners

  • Friday, September 30, 2016

Betty Manners West, 81, died peacefully at home, following a valiant battle with cancer, with her loving husband, James (Jim) West, at her side. Their love spanned over 62 amazing years.

Betty was born in Detroit, Mi., and met Jim in high school in Clarksville, Tn. Their adventures began in Cookeville, Tn., while Jim finished his senior year at Tennessee Tech and Betty worked for a telephone company to help buy the groceries. After graduation, Jim’s job with TVA took them to many different cities with the final settling city being Chattanooga. Betty went on to work for a local insurance agency to which she retired after 15 years. She was a faithful and active member of St. John United Methodist Church where she served in several capacities, among which included chair of the Board of Trustees and secretary of the Church Council. She enjoyed reading and needlepoint at which she excelled. Jesus Christ and her family were foremost in her life.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, William E. and Theadus Manners of Clarksville.

She is survived by husband, James (Jim) West,  brothers, Edward (Kathy) Manners and Roy Manners, both of Clarksville, Tn., sons, James Neal (Debbie) of Seattle, Wa., Jonathan Dale, of Chattanooga, granddaughters, Heather (Joel) Jones, of Atlanta, Christine (Marty) Troglen of Bryant, Al., Lorien (Charles) Castor, of Chattanooga, and Rachel West of Columbus, Oh.; five great-granddaughters and three great-grandsons.

A private graveside service will be held on Monday, Oct. 3, followed by a visitation with family at St. John UMC from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. and a memorial service at 1:15 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to St. John United Methodist Church, 3921 Murray Hills Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37416.
