Dr. Stephen R. Miller
The Friends of Moccasin Bend Lecture Series will host the Sound of Music in Cades Cove: Nature, National Parks, and Shape-note Singing by Dr. Stephen R. Miller, professor of music and author.
The lecture will be held Monday at the Camp House in downtown Chattanooga, 149 East MLK Blvd. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the lecture begins at 7 p.m.
Review for the lecture:
Everybody knows the South bequeathed jazz and rock’n’roll to the world, but another, older southern musical legacy is less well known. Shape-note, or Sacred Harp, singing is a kind of rural, participatory, a cappella, loud music that has now emerged out of the South and may be heard across the U.S., around the world, and in recent films such as Cold Mountain and Lawless. Shape-note singers often gravitate toward historical settings, sometimes near or in national parks, including the celebrated Cades Cove. Stephen R. Miller will explore “sympathetic vibrations” between natural areas and Sacred Harp singing.
