Covenant Women Rally To Beat Sewanee 3-2

  • Wednesday, September 7, 2016
After going down 1-0 at the end of the first half, the Covenant women's soccer team responded with three second-half goals to push past Sewanee with a score of 3-2 in non-conference play at Scotland Yard.

With the win, the Lady Scots evened their record at 1-1 while the Tigers are now 2-2.

The Tigers scored the first goal of the match after Tyler Edell put the ball in the net after Tasha Saunders' shot was deflected by a Covenant defender in the 42nd minute to make it 1-0. Sewanee would take that lead into halftime.

Covenant responded two minutes into the second half with a goal of its own, as senior Savanna Cingilli scored on a through ball by Anna Porch to tie the match at 1-1.
Cingilli scored again on a through ball in the 52nd minute, with Summer Bader notching the assist, to give the Lady Scots a 2-1 advantage. The goals for Cingilli were not only her first two of the year, but the first two in her career.

Sewanee answered back in the 65th minute with a goal by Shelby Meckstroth, assisted by Dayla LaRocque, but the equalizer only lasted for three minutes as Lady Scots sophomore Hannah Kingscored off of a slow rolling ball after a corner kick in the 68th minute giving Covenant a 3-2 lead.

The Tigers came within inches of scoring another equalizer in the 74th minute after they were awarded a penalty kick for a handball in the box, but Tasha Saunders' shot hit the crossbar before ricocheting away.

Covenant keeper Rachel Lemay made three saves throughout her 90 minutes of play, allowing two goals. She is now 1-1 on the season. Sewanee keeper Samantha Bourgeois (2-2) also played the entire match and allowed three goals, making one save.

The Lady Scots were outshot 13-10, but put four shots on goal while the Tigers had five shots on target.
