Hamilton County Department of Education STARS (Students Taking a Right Stand) announces a series of youth leadership events designed to empower secondary student leaders to "Think, Be, and Do the Positive."
The events are scheduled throughout the month of September and are designed to encourage student leaders to promote positive interaction among peers to positively impact the total school climate and culture.
The events will be from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on Sept. 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, and 22 at the South Chattanooga Recreation Center located at 1151 West 40th St.
The event on the Sept. 16 will be held at STEM School Chattanooga from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
“Students have incredible power to create positive action,” said Karen Glenn, who oversees STARS/School Climate initiatives for the Hamilton County Schools. “Our students are smart and creative; their input is crucial to enhancing the school environment.”
The middle school student leaders will be engaged in a Youth Summit working to craft an action plan to address pertinent issues identified on their respective campuses. Participating middle schools include Brown, CCA, Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy, CSAS, CSLA, Dalewood, East Hamilton, East Lake Academy, East Ridge, Hixson, Hunter, Lookout Valley, Normal Park, Ooltewah, Red Bank, Sale Creek, Signal Mountain, Soddy Daisy, and Tyner.
Move2Stand is the focus of the high school training which encourages students to serve as “upstanders” in the anti-bullying movement. Participating high schools include Brainerd, CCA, CSAS, Central, East Hamilton, East Ridge, Hixson, Howard, Ivy Academy, Lookout Valley, Ooltewah, Red Bank, Sale Creek, Soddy Daisy, STEM, and Tyner Academy,
Funding for the event is provided in part from the TDOE Safe School Grant and from the Tennessee Valley Federal Credit Union (TVFCU).
