UTC Wrestlers Win 29-10 Over Southern Illinois-Edward

  • Saturday, January 21, 2017
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team snapped a four-match slide with a 29-10 win at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville tonight.  The Mocs (4-7, 2-0 SoCon) ran out to a 13-0 lead and took eight of the 10 individual matches in the win.

Sophomore Alonzo Allen continues to impress with another big win at 125.  He scored an 18-9 decision over senior Freddy Rodriguez to open the dual.  Rodriguez was the preseason Southern Conference favorite at 125 after winning the league title last year.

Sophomore Chris Debien followed that with a 16-11 decision over John Muldoon at 133.
Both of the Mocs first two wrestlers set season highs for scoring in a Division I match.

Sophomore Chase Zemenak scored a decision at 141 and freshman Dylanger Potter won in overtime at 149.  SIUE (1-9, 1-2 SoCon) got on the board with a pin at 157, but junior Justin Lampe answered with a decision at 165.

The Cougars made it 16-10 with a major at 174, but the Mocs won the last three.  Junior Bryce Carr, No. 17 at 184 this week, improved to 15-3 with a pin.  Senior Clay Dent scored an overtime win at 197 and No. 10 Jared Johnson closed out the evening with a major decision at heavyweight.

The Mocs return home next Saturday for a doubleheader against Campbell and Davidson.  Action begins at Noon (E.S.T.) at Maclellan Gym.
