Jazzanooga Celebrates Black History Month

  • Thursday, January 26, 2017

Here are some events that Jazzanooga will host celebrate Black History Month:

Black Art In America

African American visual art is the visual representation of its people's history, hopes and dreams. Jazzanooga has partnered with Black Art in America to present an exhibit of African American art by nationally known artists of color from Feb. 1-April 30.

The show is curated by BAIA Founder/Director Najee Dorsey who will be coming back to Chattanooga in April to lead a community discussion about Diversity in Art.

The exhibit is free for viewing at the Jazzanooga Arts Space on MLK.

The Harlem Renaissance Effect

Monday, Feb. 6, session begins at 6 p.m.
The Harlem Renaissance was a blossoming (c. 1918-37) of African American culture, particularly in the creative arts, and the most influential movement in African American literary, visual and musical history.

Jazzanooga is collaborating with 800 Collective, founded by local artist/educator R Josiah Golson to use visual art to celebrate Black History Month. This event will engage Chattanooga residents in a creative workshop that explores the brilliance of the Harlem Renaissance and its place in the American story.

The workshop will use visual art to promote the prominence of jazz as a major staple of the Harlem Renaissance, and explore its usefulness in helping communities to connect and thrive.
