U.S. Army Veteran Retired From Moccasin Bend After Almost 40 Years

George Frank Saddler, 83, died on January 27, 2016. 

He was born on November 3, 1933 in Sylacauga, Al., to the late Mr. and Mrs. Major and Mary Lou Saddler.

Rev. Saddler Rev. Saddler graduated from East Highland High School in Sylacauga, Alabama and attended McKenzie College, Beaumont State and served his country through the United States Army where he was honorably discharged. He later moved to Lookout Mountain, Tennessee and began a long career with the State of Tennessee in 1967.

Rev. Saddler’s service to Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute began in 1967 and lasted almost 40 years where he served as an “original employee” meaning he was there when the hospital first opened its doors. He held several positions but most enjoyed working closely with patients in the nursing department because he had direct contact with them and could let his light shine as he spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. Upon his retirement from the State of Tennessee he was recognized for his distinguished service to the citizens of Tennessee.

Rev. Saddler accepted Christ at an early age and was called into the ministry in 1978 at the Olivet Baptist Church where Reverend Robert Richards served as pastor, later he became assistant pastor of Olivet Baptist Church and completed seminary school at the American Baptist Theological Seminary. He later was called to pastor for over 10 years for Marble Top Baptist Church in Kensington, Ga.

Rev. Saddler praised the lord over the years with reverence and honor and in 2005 became the Pastor of St. Elmo Methodist Church in Georgetown, where he retired in 2016.

Rev. Saddler was predeceased by his parents the late Mr. and Mrs. Major Saddler, two brothers, Frank Saddler, John Saddler, and two sisters, Mrs. Juanita Long and Mrs. Mae Eva Threatt.

He is survived by a dedicated and loving wife, Mary Kathryn Saddler; his children, Angela Saddler-Webb (Chattanooga), Cheryl Cobb- Debrosse (Woodland Hills, Ca.), Cheryl Saddler (Rochester, NY) and Michael Saddler (Rochester, NY); two sisters, Mrs. Lillian Lawrence of Talladega, AL, and Mrs. Pauline S. Hamlette (Thomas) of Fort Washington, MD; five sisters-in-law, Mrs. Beulah King, Mrs. Gloria Harris, Mrs. Vivian Langston, Mrs. Barbara Davenport, and Mrs. Montine Kelly of Chattanooga; two brothers-in-law, Mr. John Tumblin (Patricia) and Mr. Edgar Tumblin; grandchildren, Allison Webb, Summer Webb, Gerald Webb III, Michelle Suliveras (Juan), Jennifer Saddler, Angelyn Suliveras, and Devin Debrosse: and a host of beautiful nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 3, at Olivet Baptist Church with Bishop Kevin Adams officiating. Interment will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The body will lie in state after noon on Thursday, Feb. 2, and the family will receive friends from 6–7 p.m. at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.
