Free Balance Classes Starting In Ooltewah On Jan. 31

  • Thursday, January 5, 2017

Seniors in the Ooltewah/Collegedale area will have a chance to take part in a free series of classes designed to improve balance.

Garden Plaza of Greenbriar Cove, an independent living community at 4586 Forsythia Way, and Life Care Center of Collegedale, at 9210 Apison Pike, will offer A Matter of Balance to the community starting Jan.

31, and meeting twice weekly for four weeks.

The classes will meet every Tuesday and Thursday, from 1-3 p.m. at Life Care Center of Collegedale and from 2-4 at Garden Plaza of Greenbriar Cove.

Therapy students from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will lead the classes, following the nationally-recognized A Matter of Balance curriculum. The interactive seminars cover various ways to improve balance, from footwear to activity level to the effect of medication on balance.

Balance is especially important to seniors because falls take a greater toll on older adults than on younger adults. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in five falls among Americans age 65 and older causes a serious injury.
