Mormon leaders paid tribute to longtime BYU football coach LaVell Edwards, whose funeral was Sunday.
Known as the pioneer of the modern passing game in college football, he was in Chattanooga a few years ago for the BYU alumni golf tournament.
Phil Smartt, local Mormon leader, said the event was to raise money for Chattanooga youth to attend BYU.
His grandson, Geoffrey Cannon, said the coach "cared about football, sure, but he cared about his faith, his family and people more."
His BYU teams won 257 games between 1972 and 2000.
There were 19 conference championships and a national championship in 1984.
His son-in-law, Ken Cannon, spoke of his "unwavering strength, compassion and righteousness, his unflagging humor and kindness."
The member of the College Football Hall of Fame died Dec. 29 at age 86.
