Billy Hartman
Billy Hartman, 83, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 12, 2017.
He was born on Jan. 7, 1934, in Antioch, Tn., and was the son of the late Roy and Willie Hartman. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Wilma Peters Hartman, as well as siblings, Roy (Ruby), Charles, Corky (Martha) Hartman and a sister, Frances Beasely (Manson).
He is survived by one brother, Gene Hartman (Becky) and one sister in law, Betty Jean Hartman. As a devoted father, he is survived by his children, daughter, Mickie Dove (Kevin) and son, Ricky Hartman (Janet) and grandchildren, Brittany Brown (Ben), Brady Dove (Paige), Julia and Stewart Hartman; and two great-grandsons, Cooper and Hutchinson Brown as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Hartman graduated from Antioch High School in 1951 and was a proud member of the Tennessee Air National Guard in Nashville. He worked as a supervisor at Genesco Shoe Company where he met his future wife, Wilma Peters, and they later married in Nashville in 1958. In 1960 he moved to Chattanooga to start the Duo-Fast office from which he retired in 2000 after 40 years of dedicated service. Since 1964, Mr. Hartman has been a faithful and loyal member of Oakwood Baptist Church where he has served as deacon and on various committees throughout the years, most notably on the Finance and Building committees.
An avid sportsman, Mr. Hartman’s true passion was baseball. As a young man, he enjoyed playing with the Nashville Bridge Team “Nabrico” and he turned down an offer to play professional baseball for the New York Giants. He enjoyed playing golf and developed many lifelong friendships while enjoying the game as a member of Valleybrook Country Club and later, Council Fire Country Club. Mr. Hartman was also longtime supporter of UTC basketball and UT football teams.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Joe Wright, Billy Morris, Jim Sievers, Ed Ingle, Gordy Nichol, Ron True and Toby Ayre.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, Nov. 16, from 5–8 p.m. at Chattanooga Funeral Home North Chapel.
There will be a private burial for family and friends Friday, Nov. 17, at 10 a.m. at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
A memorial service will take place on Friday, Nov. 17, at 12 p.m. at Oakwood Baptist Church, 4501 Bonny Oaks Drive, with Reverend Ken Clark officiating. There will be a Celebration Luncheon, which everyone is welcomed to attend, immediately following the memorial service in the church’s fellowship hall.
