Linda Harris
Linda Becker Harris, 77, of Chattanooga, passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2017, at a local hospital.
She was born on Sept. 8, 1940, in Chattanooga to the late Marvin L. and Lilly Gray Becker.
Mrs. Harris was a member of Brainerd Presbyterian Church, and was a retired environmentalist with TVA after 20+ years of service. During that time she received several awards for her work with the Hiawassee Water Shed project and the National Clean Marina project. Linda also was instrumental in establishing the recycling program in Chattanooga. She was a graduate of UTC and received her Masters degree in Special Education from Syracuse University in New York. Linda developed the curriculum and served as first acting director of Scenic Land School.
Linda was the president of Chattanooga Audubon Acres as well as a lifetime member and active volunteer. Linda was formally the Director of the Chattanooga Nature Center, and was an active volunteer there as well.
Linda had a beautiful heart and soul, and she was loved by lots of people. Unlike most, she made a true difference in the lives of others by teaching people of all ages about something close to her heart, which was how important it is to protect and preserve our beautiful planet, especially rivers, and streams, and wetlands. She was respected and loved by her coworkers and peers in both the scientific and educational communities. She was strong and beautiful, and devoted her life to her family and friends. She also dedicated her life to sharing her enthusiasm for, and knowledge of, environmental conservation, outreach, and education. She inspired many, and has been referred to by her colleagues as a Warrior for environmental conservation.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ray F. Harris.
Survivors include her son, Benjamin Kurt (Tina) Harris; daughter, Amy Glenn Harris; grandson, Doug J. Gill, all of Chattanooga; sister, Jessica (Gordon) Ingram, of Tampa, Fl.; nieces, Julie (Clyde) Smith of Biloxi, Ms., Dawn (Tim) Coleman of Tampa, Fl.; great-nephew, Tommy (Katie) Williford; great niece, Emily Coleman; and a family of friends of over 50 years in the Supper Club.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, Nov. 19, from 2-5 p.m. at the East Brainerd Chapel.
A private committal service will be held at Chattanooga National Cemetery on Tuesday, Nov. 21, at 11 a.m. with Reverend Ronald Ragon officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Chattanooga Audubon Society.
