Georgia Northwestern Men, Women Split Season Opener On The Road

  • Saturday, November 18, 2017

The Bobcats and Lady Bobcats made a three-hour drive south on Friday night and returned back home with a split of two games against former region rival Southern Crescent Tech.

In the opener, the Lady Bobcats made it four straight wins to start the season after holding on for a narrow 70-66 victory.

Tori Harvey burned the Lady Tigers for 22 points and added 10 rebounds in the victory.

Jayla Stone pumped in 17 points, while center Madison Lewis picked up another double-double with 12 points and 10 boards.

Georgia Northwestern led 19-12 after the first quarter, but saw its lead trimmed to 34-31 by halftime. The Lady Tigers ended the third quarter down by just two, 52-50, but the Lady Bobcats would hold off the hosts down the stretch.

Tori Hall and Taylor Bethune had season-highs with eight and seven points, respectively, in the win. Christina DeSalvo and Mia Clark rounded out the scoring with two points apiece.

Individual scoring for Southern Crescent was not available as of press time.

In the nightcap, the Bobcats trailed by just eight points at intermission, 33-25, but their shooting turned ice cold in the second half. Frustrated by a press defense that forced 25 turnovers on the night, Georgia Northwestern connected on just 3-of-25 shooting from the floor in the final 20 minutes.

Two of the made baskets were 3-pointers and the Bobcats were 8-of-15 from the free throw line in the second half. They didn't reach their 10th point of the half until Cole McKeehan's second trey of the night with 2:30 to play.

Bryce Waters had a good night, statistically, despite the loss with 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists. McKeehan and Deontae Jackson each finished with seven points.

Khalil Brown had a game-high 19 points for SCTC, while Stevante Cromer added 12.

The Lady Bobcats will travel to Lookout Mountain on Monday for a 5:30 p.m. contest against the Covenant College JV squad, while the Bobcats will get back to action on Tuesday as they head to Athens, Tenn. to face the JV team from Tennessee Wesleyan University.
