Roger Verlin Locke, 71 passed away Wednesday, December 6, 2017 from complications of ALS, surrounded by his family who loved him dearly.

He was born in Whitfield County and was preceded in death by his parents, William Verlin and Erlene Bennett Locke, and niece, Susan Putnam Morris.

Roger was known around town for his handlebar mustache, his swagger and love of Mopars. He was a lifelong drag racer and a member of the Mopar Mafia Car Club. A Vietnam vet, Roger proudly served in the United States Air Force for four years. One of those years was at Tahkli Air Force Base in Thailand as a decoder. He was an active member and trustee of New Hope Baptist Church. Roger should be most remembered for his love and compassion for his fellow man, as well his love of God and unwavering faith. His family will miss his quick wit, charm and ability to tell every story like it was the best story you’ve ever heard.

Those left to carry his memory include the love of his life for 51 years, Martha Locke; his children, Julie and Rob Cowan, Darrell and Celeste Locke; and the ones who loved him best, his grandchildren, Kayla Locke, Emma Shane Locke, Evan Locke, Sadie Bennett Cowan, and Max Cowan; and one great-granddaughter, Reagan Jackman.  Roger also leaves behind his brothers and sisters in law, Donald and Diane Locke, LC and Sandra Bigham, and his sister, Trisha Wrinkle; sister-in-law and brothers-in-law Belinda and Alan Parrish and Jack Stevens; also his special friends, Lloyd Davis, Reece Horne, Dennis Brock, Donald Wright, Billy Hughes, and the Curts breakfast club; special nephew, Mitchell Calhoun and several other nieces and nephews.

Roger’s family asked that flowers be omitted, and instead please donate to alsa.org or to New Hope Baptist Church, in his memory.   

The funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 9, at 11 a.m. at New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Atkins officiating. His children, Darrell and Julie, will give a eulogy.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, Dec. 8, from 5-8 p.m.

Man Shot And Killed On Arlington Avenue On Wednesday

A man was shot and killed on Wednesday afternoon on Arlington Avenue at the Bayberry Apartments. Chattanooga Police responded around 5 p.m. and found the victim.
